As a mom of little ones, it is my professional mom opinion that you will NEVER go wrong by incorporating gross motor activities for toddlers into their everyday routine!
Bad days, good days and everything in between, action songs for kids are a great way to have fun and burn off energy (and help you survive temper tantrums)!
While there are a lot of classic toddler songs out there like wheels on the bus, if you are anything like me you’ve probably sung it over and over and just want to learn a new song that has gross motor activities for toddlers.
Action Songs for Kids
After waking up in the middle of the night with the melody to wheels on the bus playing in my head, I knew I had to find new songs.

At the time I came up with this song, my daughter was learning new types of animals. It occurred to me that I could easily turn this into a song that included lots of fun movement for her!
This Animal Action song is a great way to burn off that last little bit of energy before winding down for bed!
And don’t forget that gross motor activities for toddlers are a great technique to navigate through temper tantrums 😊
Animal, Animal What Do You See?
(Child’s name, child’s name) what do you see?
Who is that animal looking back at me?
Ahhh! It is an (insert animal) looking back at me!
Hurry, hurry! It’s chasing after me…
(action) like an (animal), (action, action, action)!!
And repeat to the next animal until all the animal actions have been done:
Elephant: Stomp like an elephant, stomp, stomp, stomp!
Monkey: Swing like a monkey: swing, swing, swing!
Lion. Run like a lion: run, run, run!
Rabbit. Hop like a rabbit: hop, hop, hop! Bird. Fly like a bird: flap, flap, flap! Dolphin. Jump like a dolphin: jump, jump, jump! Bear. Crawl like a bear: crawl, crawl, crawl!
My other absolute favorite action songs for kids are The Freeze Game and The Tooty-Ta!
These song are upbeat, and tons of fun-even Mom and Dad will want to dance along!
7 Classic (And Fun) Toddler Songs
These classic toddler songs also cover a variety of gross motor activities for toddlers:
- March in the Infantry – One of my favorite Sunday school songs, I’m too young helps to teach our children a valuable lesson while marching their way across the room!
- Going on a Bear Hunt – This song will have you squishing through mud, swimming across rivers and using your imagination as you hunt for a bear!
- Ants Go Marching- When the ants go marching you and your toddlers will have a chance to practice movement and counting!
- Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes- Learn body parts and get your toddler moving around, this song will never go out of style!
- Hokie-Poky- This song might be more age appropriate for preschool aged kids, but you can never start helping your toddlers learn their left and right sides too early!
- If You’re Happy and You Know It– Always a good way to get smiles on our children’s faces, I love to use this song to help kids learn their body parts. Mix it up by having thing “touch their nose, eyes, ears etc.” instead of clap their hands.
- I’m a Little Teapot- Short and sweet, this song will have everyone in the house tipping for fun!
